First Born

by Ayelet

It was a warm afternoon. The sun was up in the sky, the flowers bloomed, the birds sang. Actually it was a perfect spring afternoon. In one of the rooms of a house Iolaus and Hercules were sitting, or to be exact Iolaus was sitting.

Hercules was pacing back and forth, constantly looking at the closed door some 10 paces away from him.

Iolaus grinned at his friend "You'll cut a path through your own floor if you keep this up, Herc" .

"It's easy for you to speak, it's not your wife in there", replied Hercules, without the slightest glimpse of amusement in his eyes.

Iolaus grin faded as memories came back to him. " No, I guess it's not", He quietly said.

"Oh, Iolaus, I didn't mean to hurt you, you know that. It's just that...well ...it's that, that, I'm..."

Iolaus smiled again."You are as nervous as Hades and you have no idea how todeal with it."

Hercules burst in a relieved laughter,. "Yeah, I guess you're right. I just never been so nervous in my life." He sat down beside his friend and breathes deeply.

Iolaus put his hand on Hercules' arm and said "You'll be fine, Herc,You'll.."

Both of them jumped when all of a sudden a woman's cry came from behind the closed door

Iolaus could see the muscles of his friend's arm tense and put a soothing arm on Hercules' shoulder again. "There's nothing you can do about it, Herc, just sit down and wait. Believe me, it's worth the while. "

Silence fell after that, then Hercules responded, "Yeah, I guess you're right," but never removed his gaze from the shut door. "I just feel so useless." He got back to his feet and started pacing the room again.

Iolaus leaned back in his chair and smiled to himself."Here we go again."

An hour passed by. Deianeira's cries were getting louder and Hercules seemed to be growing more troubled with each cry.

"You know, I really wish you'd stop doing that!" He burst out at Iolaus, who was still leaning back in his chair looking amused at his friend.

"e, What? What did I do? Hey, let go of my arm." Hercules suddenly grabbed Iolaus' arm as a very loud cry came from behind the closed door, instantly followed by the sound of a baby crying.

A few minutes later the door opened and there stood Alcemene. "Congratulations, it's a boy," she said and rushed towards her son, who seemed to fall to the ground if it wasn't for Iolaus' arm he was holding.

"It's a boy, Herc. You have a son," Iolaus said.

The words seemed to finally reach Hercules' mind and he raced forward into the bedroom.

Iolaus got up to follow, but Alcemene firmly stopped him. "Give them a moment alone, they can use it".

Iolaus noded and smiled at her. "So, you are a grandmother now. Granny Alcemene, nice sound to it too".

She laughed and shoved him to the bedroom door. As they walked in, they saw a glowing Deianeira, leaning against a huge pile of pillows, smiling and happily looking at her husband. Hercules was sitting at her bedside, holding in his arms a small swadled package. Iolaus walked towards him, and touched his shoulder.

Hercules lifted his eyes to him and smiled. "It's a boy, Iolaus, I have a son."

"Yes, you do, and he's a lovely little thing, isn't he?" He bent to kiss Deianeira's cheeks.

"Hey don't go around flirting with my wife shortie", came a rather amused shout from behind his shoulder.

Iolaus turned around and faced his best friend. "I'll forget shortie was ever mentioned, if you'll let me hold that son of yours." He smiled at the proud father and took the baby from his arms.

"So, did you choose a name yet?" Alcemene asked her son.

"Yeah, did you?" joined Iolaus.

"Well that's up to Deianeira to decide," replied Hercules.

Deianeira took her first born from the blonde hunter's arms and smiled to her husband. "Ason" she said " his name is Ason".

"Why Ason?" wondered Alcemene.

"Just because she likes the name," answered Hercules, and turned to his wife "Right?".

"Right," she answered and handed him his son.

He held his son and pulled her to him with his free arm. She smiled to him and their lips met in their first kiss as parents.

Alcemene and Iolaus smiled to each other and turned to leave the room, when they reached the door, they turned to take last look at the happy family. "They look so happy togethe,r" Alcemene whispered to Iolaus.

"Yes, they do, don't they?" he replied, and they left the room.

Outside the sun was setting, but the birds still sang, and the flowers still bloomed. The whole world seemed to be drawning in joy, and in the bedroom of the house, Hercules and Deianeira were sitting, holding their first son, and smiling at each other.
