Iolaus Jumping In

by Ayelet

[This story takes place between "Hercules and the Circle of Fire" and "Hercules in the Underworld".]

Iolaus, noble hunter and warrior; fighter of many wars on the side of good and justice; husband to the lovely Enya; and best friend to Hercules, the mighty son of Zeus, laid down in his bed and stared at the ceiling. He had really gotten to know it in the two hours that had passed since he woke up. Usually, he would not do this kind of thing...lying around doing nothing...that was against any and every thing he believed in. "This is getting ridiculous!" He thought to himself, as he glanced around the small room. He was in Hercules' guest room, which was small, but warm, comfortable, and...organized. "Look at this. Every single thing is in place. I've known Herc for many years, and he is many things...but organized...nahhh. It's all her doings."

He had been visiting Hercules for the past two weeks, and still hadn't managed to get the son of Zeus alone for a moment. They had so much to catch up on, but all Hercules seemed to be catching these days was Deianeira. Iolaus rolled over in bed. "This has got to stop...I haven't had a decent conversation with him since, since...well, since a little after my wedding. Gods, Enya's stew can't be all that bad! Every time I show up, Deianeira is always with him...don't they do things by themselves occasionally??" He rolled again, trying to catch some glimpse of the morning sun without having to get out of bed. "Oh, what am I doing?? He's my best friend...and he's obviously in love with her..." He shrugged. That much was obvious...Hercules probably wasn't aware of the number of times he mentioned her name in their conversations, and Iolaus knew better than to tell him. "This just can't go on...I've got to make Herc come back to his senses." He mumbled. Senses...the only sense his friend had recently was for Deianeira's whereabouts... "NO! I'm not going to go there." Iolaus said firmly to himself and sat up in his bed. "He's my best friend...he loves her, she loves him. They are going to get married...and if I am honest...I haven't seen Herc that happy in a long time!" He was in the middle of a self-convincing process when he heard giggles from the other room. "Oh, this is low!" He said to himself. "O.K., so they can't get away from each other for longer than - ummm, a second. Fine...but this...gods!. In the middle of the morning..." He waited for a minute...the giggles didn't stop. "O.K., that's done it! I'm gonna jump in on them! That'll teach 'em a lesson!" He got out of bed. "Iolaus, you're acting like a child. Yeah I know, but it's fun!" After this inner talk, he walked on to the door. He opened it, and jumped in the room....

What he saw was not what he expected. He found Deianeira sitting by the window; she was reading something, and that something made her giggle. "Oh great! Just my luck." Iolaus thought and threw his hands in the air. Just to make sure of things, he glanced to the other side of the house. His glance found Hercules still in bed, sleeping like a baby. "Something is wrong in this picture...." he thought. "Hercules is in bed all alone...Deianeira by the window and she's all alone too...did I miss something?" All of a sudden, a notion hit him...a huge smile shone on his face. "The morning after syndrome...Been there, done that! Well, that explains it!" Once he was reassured again, he brought his attention back to Deianeira...she hadn't even noticed him jumping in the room...and was still giggling happily. "Deianeira, what's so funny??" he asked her. "Huh??" She turned her head to him and burst out in a roaring laughter. "Iolaus...didn't you...ummm...forget something?" She managed out between the roars of laughter. "Me? Forget? Deianeira, what are you talking about?!?!?!" She managed to stop laughing, though the effort of it was clearly shown on her face. "Iolaus, dear, this blue bathing thingy...it's nice, but, don't you think that something more...well...covering would be more appropriate now?" He looked down at himself. "Oh, Gods!" All he was wearing was his blue bathing thing...He had completely forgotten about it. Then he looked up at the laughing Deianeira again. "Oh, great gods, this is so embarrassing." Then he joined her laughter. "So you really think this blue thingy is nice?" he asked her. She laughed so hard she could hardly answer. "Adorable, Iolaus, adorable..."
