Virtual Survivor Immunity Challenge week 7: List all the Old Hunter's Tricks you can think of (may include tricks from fan fic stories and YH). The list with the most tricks on it wins. You may only post 1 list and once posted you may not add to it. -------------------------------------------- Hey all! The four folks still in the game have only 24 hours to post those immunity challenges and trust me you need it. We've got a very popular secret word this week..... So I'm opening it up to the list to help ya'll out a little. The challenge was to list all the old hunter's tricks you can think of. so if anyone on the list can think of a trick or two. (not, I repeat NOT a whole list of them, we're just helping out a little) feel free to post them. Or point our players in the right direction. The tricks can be from the series, YH or from fan fic stories. Let's see, as I recall in my answer to the IWC challenge to write a story where Iolaus and Orestes have to change places I had Iolaus teaching Orestes all sorts of things, like using a blanket to make a snare to catch rabbits. Orestes used it to catch the bad guys. I called the story, "Don't You Know an Old Hunter's Trick When You See One" And in YH there was an episode about Iolaus' Uncle flaitus who was an old hunter btw and I recall something about smelling the deer turds to determine how long since the deer had been there or something like that. I'm sure someone around here can point ya'll towards a list of old hunter's tricks from the series that's on the web somewhere...... Just helping out a little Love Ceryndip ---------------------------------- Okay, I'll take a shot at this. I've wracked my brains and this is all I can come up with (thanks for the helpful post this morning, Dear Game Goddess!) Old Hunters Tricks From: Pride Goes Before A Brawl Figuring directions by looking at the sky… "Okay, west is the night side of south…" Putting hunting dogs off your trail… Roll in the mud with female of your choice and don't move while the bad guys with hunting dogs pass you by because you've hidden your scent with the mud. How to kill giant eels or sea snakes… Biting out their eyes. Setting traps to kill or stop large animals (or barbarians or even barbarians posing as satyrs)… Rig moose horns to a high tree branch with sturdy rope. When they hit the trip wire they are impaled. Or Rig a trip wire to haul them off their feet and hang them upside down from a high tree branch so they are, in effect, left swinging in the wind. Or Rig a trip wire to send an extremely large log crashing down from a great height (This is a good way to get more than one barbarian or satyr at a time). Fires can be started by striking two pieces of flint rock together right next to tinder-dry roots that are sticking out of a cave ceiling. From King of Thieves Separating your mind from your body and becoming one with a rock (not sure if this is an old hunter's trick or not) How to prevent being gored by a wild boar… Chase the boar around until it gets tired then look it straight in the eye until you put the boar into a trance. From Love Amazon Style To catch rabbits… Build a sturdy wooden trap and use the biggest carrot in the world for bait (Be careful not to let your buddy raz you too much over the location you've chosen to set your particular trap). From Young Hercules How long it's been since a deer was present in the area… smell it's droppings (ugh!) From Ceryndip's Story: "Don't you know an old hunter's trick when you see one" To catch bandits… you can use an old blanket and rope as a snare if you base the design on a smaller snare to catch rabbits If you can hear a stream while you are walking you'll have plenty of water. If you can no longer hear the stream, your waterskin had better be full already When birds stop singing it can signal that predators (or bandits) are in the area. You can tell the age of an animal by the definition of it's tracks. From MaryE's Story: "Thessaly Prison (Black &) Blues To reduce swelling in injured joints… Applying Leaches to the injured area will reduce swelling and restore mobility almost immediately. From MaryE's Story: "Things That Shouldn't Be" To kill small game birds… Make a slingshot (it helps if you have Ares give you private lessons in how to make and use the slingshot) From MaryE's Story "The Memory Remains" (this story is posted on Morgan's Website which can be reached through the Library Links - so I don't know if these Tricks will count) Here's the whole section on hunter's tricks… …While they ate breakfast, Iolaus outlined the lesson for the day. He wanted to impress on the boy how important the 5 senses were to becoming a successful hunter. Iolaus told Telcus and Hercules that he intended to sharpen their skills in that area much the same way his own uncle had taught him this very lesson when he was a little boy. "The first sense you're gonna be using is your sight. Watching for animal tracks in the dry dirt and in the mud. Seeing the evidence of how big the animal you are tracking is in height and weight by examining their footprints. Looking for signs of recent activity in the area. Hearing is the second sense you'll use. I'll teach you how to tell the differences between normal forest sounds so you can tell when your prey is close enough for you to get off a clean shot. By the time I'm finished with both of you, you'll even be able to tell how many birds are in the trees within 20 feet of you and what species they are. Take a deep breath and smell the air around you. Animals have the most highly developed sense of smell. They can tell you're coming a mile away and they can especially tell when you're nervous and you start sweating. I'm gonna teach you how to disguise your own scent from the animals. I'm also gonna teach you how you can tell the smells of the different animals. Did you ever smell a bear? Well, I'll teach you what they smell like so you don't ever have to run into one unless you really want to. Touch is important for finding your way in the dark and I'll show you just how important that is when we get to the caves later. Being able to feel if you have the right amount of tension on your bow before you loose the arrow so you make a clean kill and not leave an injured animal running around. Taste is what you get to do if you've been successful with the other four senses. How are you at cooking, Telcus? We'll teach you a little bit of that too."... That's all I can come up with...good luck everybody. Mary E ----------------------------------------------------- I can only think of a few hunters tricks off the top of my head. One of them I believe came from the episode "The Unchained Heart". It was when Iolaus was going to set a wagon on fire. The other one came from a fan fiction story I read a while ago. Iolaus and Gabrielle were going through a town to go save Hercules and Xena and all men in the town were being drafted for the army, I think. Any way, Iolaus hid his weapons in two loaves of bread. There were to many people to fight so Gabrielle looks at Iolaus and says, "I've got another Old Hunters Trick for you. And they both say "Run!" That's all I could think of, hope it helps. Dark Wolf ----------------------------------------------- Ok, I really stink at this. I have searched through almost every story I could in the archives to find these. I know there are more but I just didn't have a lot of time. Some where out there is a web site with a list of old hunter tricks but I couldn't find it. Well here it goes: The Cave of the Snow Bear by Arianna ...he was eight and Herc had been six when Iolaus had begun teaching him his 'old hunter's tricks'. Iolaus had tought him how to start a fire by chipping two pieces of flint against each other over a small pile of dried grass. Then, they had caught a rabbit in a snare Iolaus had taught Herc to lay. He knew so much really neat stuff...it seemed as if there was nothing he didn't know, especially about animals and plants, the seasons, how to read the weather...he could fish, hunt, trap, clean and cook what he caught. ***** Don't You Know An Old Hunter's Trick When You See One? by Ceryndip There still wiggling in the net was a large rabbit. Carefully removing the string from the branches Iolaus tied the ends together so their dinner could not escape. "That worked marvelously." "There's one thing in life that you can always be sure of, old hunter's tricks will never fail you. Hector hesitated to ask but once again it appeared that Iolaus had effected a valiant change in his King's demeanor, "Then, may I ask which of you is responsible for setting the snares and allowing us to capture the whole gang?" Iolaus threw up his hands, "Don't look at me, Hector, I was tied up in that tent over there the whole time." "Orestes?" Hector turned to his King with something akin to wonder on his face. Orestes grinned proudly, "What's the matter Hector, don't you know an old hunter's trick when you see one? Now if you don't mind, my cousin is in need of a soft bed and so am I." The two walked off laughing, leaving Hector with his mouth hanging open. ***** A Winter's Tale by Dragona "What was that stuff you put in the food?" Kris whispered to Hercules as they slipped out of the fenced enclosure and into the trees. The demigod smiled. "It's an old hunter's trick a very good friend taught me," he explained. ***** Deadly Encounters by DreamCatcher Hercules and Iolaus attempted to prepare the villagers as best they could before Bellis' next visit. They tried to hone the skills of those that already had some experience with swords and staffs. Iolaus also worked with some of the villagers to put into place some "old hunter's tricks," to give them a small advantage over Bellis' well-trained men. ***** Iolaus and the Nemean Beast by Lunita Iolaus was busy looking at the dog sniffing his ankles. "Of course," he muttered, "If the dog could find the den once, why not again?" He slapped his forehead. "Old hunter's trick! Why didn't I think of it?" ***** Fishing by Margui The golden hunter stood on the banks of the river. The tall reeds equaled the man's height. His impetuousness for fishing today nearly consumed him. He grabbed his fishing gear and went down to the river. Iolaus knew a few hunter's tricks and he was sure he could bag a big one. ***** Quietwolf Chapter One: Days of Light "I didn't leave him," she replied. "I did drug him. I had to. It was the only way I could escape. But I was worried about what would happen so I sat with him while he was unconscious. When he began to come out of it, I climbed a tree. He woke up, naturally thought I was long gone, and left. But really I was only five feet above his head." Iolaus snickered at this bit of ingenuity. He would have to add it to the bag of Old Hunter's Tricks. Chapter Five: Behind Blue Eyes "So, do you have an Old Hunter's Trick for this situation?" Elissa inquired. "Well, there's always the direct approach," Iolaus told her, charging the monster. Chapter Twelve: Under A Raging Moon “That was a great idea,” Elissa told him. “Heating the blood on the sword until it liquefied and pressing it against the dagger. Two weapons. Sinis never saw that coming.” “Old Hunter’s Trick,” Iolaus told her, wiping the dagger clean in the grass. “Really?” ******************************* TV shows pride comes before a brawl there is a scene when he and lydia come out of the pit after fooling the bad guy into coming down and Iolaus has her skirt a mud scene to throw the scent of the dogs off a scene with the eel and biting their eyes does lydia old hunters trick in the cavan with the hydra count. her father was an old hunter ***** king of thieves does a trick from the east count. he learned to slow his breathing down when thrown into the late when he was in the pit with the boar he put it into a trance - an old hunters trick well thats all I got. I know I wont have enough. let me just say the Iolaus has a MILLION Old Hunters Trick for tracking, hunting, fishing, snaring, hiding, starting fires, fighting, being sneaky, and every thing else. Athena ----------------------------------- Although I got offed last week..well I hope this helps those 4 desperate survivors trying to figure out this week's immunity challenge.. Some of Iolaus' old Hunter tricks... From fanfic story where Iolaus loses his memory: Iolaus talks to Gabrielle "Well, I know that you have to set the snares in this direction. You always have to set the snares near animal trails and in the direction you think the animal is coming from.." Gabrielle "Iolaus you haven't lost all your memory..you set snares just like Xena does" On fishing.. "I'm tired of eating rabbit all the time..let's fish for our dinner..Gabrielle suggests.. "Gabrielle," says Iolaus tiredly "I don't have my memory..I don't know how to fish.." Gabrielle sits by a noisy lake and gets no fish. Iolaus walks up the lake with a string full of fish. "You see Gabrielle, old Hunter's trick..if you want to get fish..you must fish where nobody else fishes..that way it is quiet and the fish are not scared away..quiet lake equals lots of fish" as Iolaus displays proudly his large catch. On sensing danger.. Iolaus tensed and stopped in the middle of the trail. Gabrielle almost walked into him. Iolaus cocks his ear to listen intently to the woods "Shhh Gabrielle..it's too quiet..there are no animal sounds..uhoh..that means there's danger ahead.." Skylark ----------------------------- Forgot all about this until Ceryn's reminder, then put it off some more. I was just about to post my immunity challenge, then realized I was past the deadline. It's usually a good idea to read the directions *ahead* of time! :) Even though I'm too late, I just had to add Iolaus' releasing what-his-name from the neck irons in "Siege At Naxos". Don't think anyone's listed that yet. I always remember that one, because Iolaus finally got to step in when Hercules *couldn't* do something! Let's hear it for the Old Hunter's Tricks! :) Cheers, QW ------------------------------- More Immunity Help from Skylark.. I figure you can post this second post of immunity help from me if you want to..since you are the game goddess..I'll let you decide.. More Immunity help from the TV series... In another episode..the whole city had become hypnotized..but Iolaus was the only one to resist mass hypnosis by using some trance tricks he learned from the Far East... In a fan fic story..Iolaus is trapped under water but he slows down his breathing and his heartbeat using a Far East trick long enough to let Hercules rescue him... In yet another fan fic stories..Iolaus is in a lot of pain as the bad guys torture him..Iolaus uses a Far East trick to imagine himself somewhere else... From one of Pythia's stories..Iolaus uses his wings and flies out of the situation...
