Virtual Survivor Immunity Challenge Week 3: Write one sentence describing Iolaus. The sentence with the most adjectives wins. ---------------------------------- Just to say - I think this may be the longest sentence I have ever written! And no - I haven't counted the adjectives, because I'm leaving that to the adjudicators ... (And this really *was* a challenge - which may be why I've not seen anyone else try it yet!) This then, is our intrepid hunter: in form compact, sturdy, muscular and athletic, with bronzed skin and perfect proportions; in face fair - or handsome, perhaps - with expressive eyes that shade from amused azure to intense cerulean, depending on whether he is moody, giggly, relaxed or passionately aroused (which might be a pained, passionate, or protesting look, subject to specific circumstance); in dress, practical but instantly recognisable, a distinctive look, purple by preference, patched out of necessity, worn in places, weathered in others; in skill unchallenged, from his vibrant, vital, swiftness in a fight, to his patient and persistent approach to the hunt; in attitude heroic, given to boldness born - not from misplaced pride - but from the depths of his courageous, determined and valiant heart; in nature kind, caring and considerate - a man not unaware of personal pain in his sorrowed life, yet buoyed by a zest for life, and an unstinting love of the world; in friendship utterly unmatched - loyal, faithful and fervent to an almost unparalleled extreme - supportive and stubborn, unyielding in hhis commitment, uncompromising in his dedication; in times of danger he can be protective, even self -sacrificing (although it might be thoughtt his unhappy experience with the malignant, merciless, evil entity named Dahok might have added cautious to this litany, that theory seems unsupported by his subsequent actions); in action dynamic, daring and dauntless; in repose unquestionably cute; in mischievous mood an imp incarnate; in love deeply affectionate, delightedly attentive and breathlessly passionate; in anger hot-headed and impetuous; in sorrow melancholic and miserable, although rarely dispirited for long; in total, infinitely and completely Iolaus - a man of many intriguing aspects, with multiple facets and intriguing depths - but ultimately an admirable, praiseworthy, and completely unique soul. Pythia ------------------------------ It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words so, if this is true, I would ask that you consider this picture's thousand words to begin "Iolaus is...", and the other 998 words to be all one continuous sentence of superlative adjectives. http://www.rtis.com/nat/user/chimera/images/justio.jpg Mary E -------------------------------- Iolaus on the outside is curly blonde hair, dimpled cheeks, rippling muscles, contagious laughter, a knee weakening smile and constant movement, yet more importantly on the inside he is the man-child ever striving to fulfil the life roles he has placed upon himself as warrior, companion, lover, friend, imp, ministerial, archer, tracker, uncle, baby sitter, son, grandson, solider, sailor, thief, student, too briefly husband and father, whose innate goodness has guaranteed him a place within the light. Elaine ----------------------------------- Well, It's MHO that Pythia's challenge is an impossible act to follow but I suppose I have to give it at least a try, right? This challenge took me back and reminded me once more why I hated English class to very much. Adjectives, adverbs and participles, oh my!! Bleck!! So I apologize in advance to all but especially any teachers on the list and to their sensibilities for probably totally destroying the english language for you see I have no idea if any of the following is at all correct. Well, I guess I am good at run on sentences. That last one just proved that, huh? LOL Here goes! With clear, unclouded eyes of bright, ocean blue the skillful Iolaus in apt form made his determined and certain way through the pre-dawn, misted forest stepping sure footed and agile on damp velvet mosses as a cool invisible breeze blew his honey wheat locks of unruly hair across his fair and handsome face as his strong, sinewy muscles twitched with the eager anticipation of the hunt for the outstanding prize the competent and tenacious hunter with his proficient ability along with his artful expertise that this qualified, tough hunter weilded after years of constant practice for which he was deserving and worthy of the esteem of his piers beause this capable and able man stood mighty, stout and sure with a powerful, portent personality that was forceful and huge in itself and such admiration this colossal and magnificent hero didn't understand. And now I give up! Darn-it! This one was hard! Hugs Bev --------------------------------------- OK I have a Merriam-Webster Thesaurus on my computer. It was the only way I could think of getting this many. (52 adjectives, I know there are more but I ran out of time) When it comes to Iolaus there are so many descriptions that fit him, for instance: His body is agile, athletic, nimble, resilient, spry, able, energetic and abounding; He is also handsome, adorable and gorgeous, brilliant, attractive, enchanting, arresting; When it comes to his stomach it is insatiable; He is also adventuresome, ambrosial, sly, keen, charming, babblative, compassionate, tender, strong, gentle, sympathetic, mellow, brawny, easygoing, spirited, dependable, ebullient, intuitive, limitless, sneaky, undaunted, exhilarating, faithful, gallant, greathearted, humorous, happy-go-lucky, impetuous, kindhearted, trustworthy, good-hearted, good-humored, good-looking, good-natured, good-tasting and good-tempered. Athena -------------------------- Well, having read the others, I pretty much know this is a hopeless task, but I really couldn't resist writing a sentence to include as many adjectives as I could to describe my favourite hero...like many others, I haven't bothered counting them...I just wanted to write them!!!! Herc gazed fondly at his best, most loved, friend, seeing the unruly, blond curls tossed by the wind over the strong, determined, bronzed face and clear, laughing cerulean eyes, the cheeky, confident grin and jaunty pose which belied the strong, muscles and amazing speed and graceful movements of which his exuberant and fearless friend was capable and wondered again how he had been so fortunate as to be blessed with such a courageous, loyal, selfless, compassionate friend who projected resolute determination, boyish enthusiastic antics or a joyful, endearing, irresistable engagement with life pretending often to be a tough customer, able to cast a chilling, threatening demeanor as easily as he showed a gentle or whimsical face or touch to a child...or anyone who was vulnerable, while always hiding the sorrowful, painfilled, often horrendous memories with which Iolaus was burdened, able somehow to pretend a detached, uncomplaining acceptance of the past, of what could not be recaptured or undone, but which Herc knew hid a haunting, immensely sad corner of Iolaus' intrepid, staunch, brave, kind, generous soul and Herc wished there was a way to tell this incredible, amazing man how much the unique gift of his life, of his very existance, meant, not only to Hercules, but to all the people through all the years who had found his friend to be an inspiring, touching, exceptional, loving example of the best of all humanity...while at the same time, not finding him aweinspiring, but approachable, impish even at times, impetuous, imperfect, too quick to anger, but steadfast...someone trustworthy, eminently likable and sweet...and Herc sighed, knowing there were no words, no way to convey to this superlative human being, more godlike in all the best ways than any god, how perfect he was, because Iolaus, humble, modest, selfeffacing to the core, would only blush, uncomfortable with the praise, would give a careless shrug, a swift shake of the head, then would collapse with effervescent giggles, and some cheeky comeback to deny the praise because for all the special qualities, for all the daily evidence of his magnificence, Iolaus could only see the imperfect man he was, the bruised, hurt, unloved child of a brutal parent, the cowardly, thieving youth who had taken to the streets, the awkward, uncertain boy who covered his profound insecurities with a brash bravado, who strove with unceasing effort to be worthy, to be deserving of the air he breathed, who felt that if he spent each endless hour of each day of his life in an endless struggle to master warrior and hunter skills, to demonstrate limitless, boundless willingness to give his all, it could scarcely be enough...not even pausing to hesitate before making a sacrificial gift of his life, if that was what was required, to express his grateful, appreciative friendship, his heartfelt love for those who had shown him the least kindness...and, after he had done his all to restore a balance through his unfailing good humour and charming declamation of any acclaim, he would set off in his usual bouncing, skipping, energetic ramble along the road ahead of them, his offkey whistling or truly awful singing interspersed with his comical, goodnatured, and sometimes even thrilling accounts of their legendary, mythical adventures, bad to truly ridiculous jokes and limitless, sometimes ludicrous, often insightful observations and speculations about the world in which they lived...and all the people who dwelled thereon, resistant of praise, yet secretly hungry and oddly, touchingly pleased by it, allowing it to salve the selfdoubting, 'never good enough' beliefs he held within himself and Herc, who rarely thanked the gods for anything, thanked them for giving him Iolaus, and asked in the secret silence of his own soul, that somehow, some one of them, would help him protect this vulnerable, irreplacable, reckless, delightful, engaging, vigorous, talented and capable man from himself and his own best intentions so that Herc would never again have to hold a small, broken shell, lifeless and cold, lost to any possible future, in his arms again, but rather that they would grant a hardwon, well earned immortality to this deserving soul....that he might always stand resolute, confident, happy, contented, even peaceful in the midst of the chaos of their lives, beside Hercules, everpresent, everwilling to guard his friend's back, with no regard for danger or risk, finally accepting in some poor measure, his worth, as his friends knew him to be beyond earthly treasure, beyond heavenly bounty, his life a blessing, a mysterious, unlooked for, unexpected but miraculous occasion for thanksgiving....but, then Herc's musings were interrupted by a sharp jab to the arm as Iolaus playfully danced with a childlike innocence away, leading Herc down to the festival below, Iolaus' eager anticipation and unfailing charisma drawing him on, so that he was left simply feeling grateful, immensely grateful, that this singularly fine man was his lifelong friend and partner, because, come what may, Herc knew he could have no better companion with whom to face life's challenges, no greater hero from whom to gather his own inspiration, upon whom to expend his own undying, limitless loyalty and love. Arianna ----------------------- Iolaus? Oh yeah, the little blonde guy, well, alphabetically speaking, he is admirable and adorable, bedazzling and beguiling, charming, cute and courageous, desirable and endearing; friendly and gorgeous, hotblooded and irresistable; joyous, kind and lusty, magnificent and noble, outrageously perky and quirky,(sorry about that one) ravishing, saucy, trustworthy, uncommonly valorous, winsome, xtremely yummy and zany (take a deep breath and go back) zestfully youthful, xciting and wise and whimsical, virtuous(scratch that) vivacious, unruly but true, steadfast and rash, quixotic, playful, optimistic and nimble, mythical, legendary and loyal, kooky and jaunty, irreplacable, honorable, giggly, gregarious and fair, ebullient, delectable, charismatic, bold and brave and adventuresome. Allie -------------------------------------------- OK, so I know I didn't need to write a story - but you know me. The sentence is there, the grammer is dreadful though! I've become adjective obsessed this week, continually thinking up new ones I could use and adding them in. I've also found that I'm not very good at diferentiating between adjectives, adverbs and verbs in some cases. My dictionary is getting lots of use! I haven't looked at anyone elses, somehow didn't seem quite fair. The contest The festival was going well, people were dancing in the streets, laughing and generally having a good time. There were lots of stalls, music, and competitions to enter including the pie eating and archery contests which Iolaus won, and the fishing contest. Hercules had won that one, stunning fish after fish whilst the other fishermen were sitting feeling more than a bit stunned themselves, their lines hanging limply over the water. The most difficult contest of all was left to last. Hercules tried to keep a straight face as he took his place on the small stage. Iolaus was standing off to one side with a furious expression on his face. He hadn't wanted Hercules to do this but the demigod had decided that just for once it would do Iolaus good to listen to him and here he wouldn't have a choice. The contest was one of words, the task of the entrants was to describe someone - it could be a member of their family, a friend, or a famous hero - with as many words as they could muster. Iolaus had declined to enter, claiming that he couldn't think of enough words that could be said in mixed company. The man preceding Hercules had been a poet and had no trouble finding words. He had decided that it would be a good idea to put Hercules up on a nice tall pedestal with his words, but he had paused in the middle of his flowery speech and that was enough to disqualify him. The description must be in one continuous sentence, with no obvious pauses. Hercules, having patiently waited his turn, cleared his throat and looking fondly down at his squirming friend began to speak, "The matchless Iolaus is my closest and dearest friend, he has blonde curly hair and azure blue eyes, his vest is worn and scruffy, ragged patches covering it, and the elegant pendant he wears is broken, but his smile is wide and genuine, his infectious, cute giggle warms my semi-divine soul like no other sound could; he may be a mere mortal, (he's better than any of the proud, unpleasant and sometimes evil gods I know) but he is willing to stand tall, brave and alone against them, to go courageous and steadfast into battle and to always be loyal; of his many dramatic and dreadful deaths I will only say that I found the bottom of the bottomless pit each memorable, terrible, awful time but he has come back to his rightful place; Iolaus has always had a bad joke and sunny smile at the ready, even though his puns are dire and his singing off-key it never seems to deter him; Iolaus is amiable, feisty, gullible, flippant, strong in body and tenacious in spirit; his temper has a short fuse, but he has a calm centre when he calls on it; he is full of joy and I watch in complete amazement as uses his delicate charms on the women with his poetic words and sly and beguiling looks, but these lovely young women adore him and his firm muscles and smooth skin, but they also love him for his bubbly, cheerful, but tender, affectionate, responsive and passionate personality; they call him handsome, sometimes even beautiful, and I've even heard an ancient and revered grandmother calling him pretty, but he enjoys the ardent attention, and talks with endless, copious and thorough care of his unbelievable, questionable, larger than truth exploits (he can add fun to the most mundane event) using a wild circular flailing of his arms and mad imaginative sword fights to catch the attentive, avid listener up into his self-created world; I call him reckless, wilful, and irritable, I tell him that he's impetuous, impossible, inexhaustible, inescapable, incorrigible, I tell him that his laughter is infectious, his smile irradiant, his heart irrepressible, I tell him that he's instinctive, irresponsible, irreverent, inquisitive beyond imagining, he's impatient, impulsive, irrational, incredulous, I tell myself that he's invincible, inspirational, indomitable, I tell him that he's indescribable, insatiable, inescapable, indignant and sometimes insane but I never tell him that he's diminutive or that he's ingenious with his brilliant, clever and skilful hunter's tricks, and I never tell him that he's irresistible or intelligent, I never tell him that he's irreplaceable, indispensable, inestimable, incomparable or incredible, he's immodest but just now I can see him blushing rosy red with modest awe at my words as he listens with a deep frown on his tanned face, but I haven't finished yet Iolaus; you are my best friend, and even though you're going to give me the worst kind of Tartarus for telling these nice people this it's time I spoke of what has been hidden in my heart, Iolaus is my wonderful friend, and in his inimitable style has protected me from my worst and most dangerous enemies, including myself, for most of my eventful life, I want to say thank you Iolaus, my warrior partner, my short (never call him short) loving, dependable, devoted, perfect friend." Hercules stepped back to indicate that he had finished, smiled, and waved as the crowd gave him tumultuous applause. But what was really making Hercules happy was the crowd of people gathering around his friend, men were slapping Iolaus on the back and giving him warm handshakes, and the women were kissing him and fussing over his hair. He was in his element for the moment but Hercules knew that his friend would want rescuing soon. The demigod left the platform, he didn't care if he won the contest or not, the attention Iolaus was finally getting was prize enough for them both. Phew! I'm glad that's over with. Grammatical category: Compound sentence Have fun counting the adjectives..! Skylark ------------------------------ Hey, Everybody! I have been avidly reading all of the descriptions of Iolaus that have appeared on the list lately, and am I intimidated or what! Is it too late to concede defeat? The problem is that FFIolaus has also been reading those glowing descriptions and he has started to get one tremendous head on him! His ego is now the size of Brazil and IMHO needs to be taken down a peg or six. Therefore, dear list sisters, I took the liberty of speaking with some people who are not overly fond of our golden hunter to get their opinion. I'm talking people like Hades, Ares, Discord, Strife (still alive in cyberspace because I didn't like Deimos) as well as a few warlords, ex-princes and overthrown generals I found wandering about, still grumbling about how they were unfairly defeated by a demigod and his partner. In any event, here follows the ANTI-IOLAUS RUN ON SENTENCE by Llyra The many enemies of Iolaus the Golden Hunter, the blue-eyed, tousle haired, , skilled warrior with the heart melting smile and body- that- just- won't- quit, morally unimpeachable, unquestionably trusted companion to Hercules, without a doubt the most handsome, virile and desirable male of this century, have variously described him as a mangy-haired, boorish womanizer with gross, glutonous, uncouth habits all wrapped up in ratty, shabby clothes and sloppy personal appearance; a boastful, lazy, cowardly, gullible, degenerate, unscrupulous pest; a cocky, self-satisfied, notorious home wrecker of base appetites and no finesse; a sneaky and underhanded trickster who deceives his opponents and lulls them into a false sense of security by pretending to be a puny, overshadowed, disreputable, drunken hick, a nasty, insignificant nobody hanger-on, while proving to be a vicious brawler like the disgusting ex-thief he is, disgracefully proud and tone-deaf with a lame sense of humour and a totally unconventional and dangerous fighting style who is not aboveexasperating friend and foe alike with his smug, mean phillandering which shows him to be a crazy and vexatious rascal, a scrawny reprobate, an unsanitary lout, an insolent, nettlesome heart breaker, delusional enough to think himself a lothario attractive to the ladies but is in fact a repulsive, insignificant, inadequate, irresponsible, wretched irritating BLOND!!!!!! Llyra ------------------------------- Ah, Iolaus. How do we describe thee? Let us count the adjectives. Quiet Wolf --------------------------- I've given this much thought, and I keep coming back to the fact that, for me, there is a single word that sums up Iolaus in his entirety, and it is not in English. It is the Russian word "blestyashchiy" (accent on the "ya") and it translates to "brilliant, shining, scintillant, splendid, magnificent ...". So here is my (admittedly offbeat) immunity challenge ... Iolaus is blestyashchiy in the beauty of his face and his form, the steadfastness of his courage, the goodness of his soul, the depth of his loyalty, the cheerfulness of his spirit, and the joy that he finds in the great and small aspects of life! Love to ya! Owlharp -------------------------------------------
